If you live in Richmond, you probably know there is no shortage of places to look after yourself. From gyms and wellness studios to beauty salons, cosmetic clinics and skin specialists, there are plenty of choices.
But when it comes to your skin, choosing where to go can be a little more complicated.
A facial can be relaxing and leave your skin feeling lovely for a few days, but if you are dealing with persistent acne, blackheads, congestion, pigmentation, sensitivity or ageing skin, you probably want more than just a nice facial. You want someone who understands your skin, can explain what is happening and can help you work out what to do next.
That is really what we do at Shine Skin and Body in Richmond.
We have been part of the Melbourne skin and beauty industry since 2012, and our Richmond clinic has been on Swan Street since 2018. Over that time, we have seen thousands of different faces and, more importantly, thousands of different types of skin.
And one thing we have learned is that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to skin.
Why do people come to Shine?
People come to us for all sorts of reasons.
Some have been struggling with adult acne for years and are frustrated because nothing seems to work for long.
Some are constantly trying to get rid of blackheads and congestion, particularly around their nose, chin and forehead.
Some are concerned about pigmentation or sun damage.
Others are noticing changes in their skin as they get older and want to improve texture, firmness, hydration and overall skin quality.
And then there are the people who simply say:
“I don’t really know what my skin needs anymore.”
That is actually one of our favourite conversations.
You don’t need to know which treatment to book before you walk through our door. That is our job.
A skin clinic rather than just another facial
There is nothing wrong with having a facial simply because it feels good. In fact, we think everyone deserves a little time out.
But at Shine, we look at facials a little differently.
We see a facial as an opportunity to assess and work with the skin.
Sometimes your skin needs hydration.
Sometimes it needs calming.
Sometimes it needs some serious congestion cleared.
Sometimes it needs a more corrective treatment.
And sometimes it needs us to do less, not more.
That last one is important.
The skincare industry is full of new treatments, new ingredients and new devices. It can be very easy to think that if something is good for your skin, then more of it must be better.
It isn’t.
Healthy skin comes first.
Richmond’s blackhead and congestion problem
One of the things Shine has become particularly well known for is our approach to extractions.
If you have ever looked closely at your skin in a magnifying mirror and thought, “Why are there so many blackheads?”, you are certainly not alone.
Blackheads, whiteheads, closed comedones and congestion are some of the most common reasons people come to see us.
They can be particularly frustrating because you can have a very good home skincare routine and still have stubborn congestion that doesn’t seem to shift.
This is where professional extractions can make a real difference.
Our Extraction Facial is one of the treatments we are best known for. We take time to prepare the skin properly and carefully assess what should and should not be extracted.
Not every bump needs to be squeezed, and trying to remove everything yourself at home can sometimes leave the skin more irritated than when you started.
Our extraction technique has been developed and refined over many years, and our therapists undergo extensive training before performing it.
It is also something we have received recognition for outside the clinic. Our extraction facial has been recognised by Melbourne publications, including Broadsheet and Time Out.
For us, though, the most rewarding recognition is when someone comes back and says:
“My skin is finally clearing.”
Adult acne is different
Adult acne can be incredibly frustrating because it often feels like you have already tried everything.
You may have changed cleansers, bought expensive serums, stopped eating certain foods, started taking supplements or followed advice from social media.
Sometimes those things help.
Sometimes they don’t.
And sometimes the problem is that you are doing too much.
When someone comes to us with acne, we don’t simply look at the spots on their face and decide what treatment to perform. We want to understand their skin and what they are currently doing at home.
What products are you using?
How often are you exfoliating?
Are you picking?
Are you stripping the skin?
Are you using products that are appropriate for your skin?
What treatments have you already tried?
Once we understand that, we can work out where to start.
For some people that might mean focusing on repair and preparation before introducing corrective treatments. For others, we may be able to start treating congestion straight away.
The important thing is having a plan.
Pigmentation is not just pigmentation
Pigmentation is another area where we think professional advice is important.
There are different types of pigmentation and different reasons it can appear. Sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation and ageing can all play a role.
That means the treatment that worked brilliantly for your friend may not necessarily be the right treatment for you.
Depending on your skin and what we are trying to achieve, your treatment plan may include professional skincare, peels, IPL or other corrective treatments.
But we don’t believe in treating pigmentation simply because a treatment is available.
We want to know what we are treating first.
What about ageing skin?
Most of our clients aren’t trying to look like someone else.
They simply want their skin to look better.
They want more glow, better texture, more hydration, less pigmentation and skin that looks healthy and cared for.
That is where a good long-term skin plan can make a difference.
Rather than waiting until you suddenly decide you need a major treatment, we prefer the idea of maintaining your skin and addressing changes as they happen.
Depending on your skin, that might involve advanced facials, LED, peels, IPL, microneedling or other professional treatments.
But again, there is no magic treatment.
Good skin is usually the result of a combination of professional treatments, appropriate homecare and consistency.
The importance of a good skin therapist
We often say that finding the right skin therapist is a little like finding a good hairdresser.
Once you find someone you trust, you don’t really want to start again.
A good skin therapist gets to know your skin over time.
They know what you have tried.
They know what has worked.
They know what hasn’t.
They can see changes that you might not notice yourself.
And they can tell you when you should do something differently.
That relationship is one of the things we value most at Shine.
We have clients who have been coming to us for years. Some have followed us from Kew to Richmond. Some have been with the clinic for more than a decade.
That is something we are incredibly proud of.
What makes a good skin clinic in Richmond?
If you are looking for a skin clinic in Richmond, we’d suggest looking beyond the treatment menu.
Ask yourself:
Will someone actually take the time to understand my skin?
Will they explain why they are recommending a treatment?
Do they have experience with the skin concern I am trying to address?
Will they tell me if a treatment isn’t appropriate?
Will they help me with what I am doing at home?
Is there a plan beyond today’s appointment?
Those questions are much more important than whether a treatment menu has 50 different facials on it.
Our approach to treatment
At Shine, we think about skin in four stages:
Repair
Before we can achieve significant change, sometimes we need to get the skin healthy and functioning properly.
Prepare
We then prepare the skin for more corrective treatments where appropriate.
Rejuvenate
Once the skin is ready, we can work on specific concerns such as pigmentation, acne, congestion, ageing and texture.
Maintain
And finally, we maintain the results.
This approach means your treatment isn’t necessarily the same every time you visit.
Your skin changes.
Your treatment should change with it.
Why being in Richmond matters to us
Shine wasn’t created yesterday.
The clinic began in Kew in 2012 before moving to Swan Street in Richmond in 2018.
We love Richmond because it feels like a real community while still being right in the middle of Melbourne.
Our clients come from Richmond itself, but also from surrounding suburbs such as Cremorne, Burnley, Hawthorn, Kew, Abbotsford, Collingwood, South Yarra and the Melbourne CBD.
Some people work nearby and come in during the day.
Others make the trip specifically because they want to see one of our therapists.
And some have simply become part of the Shine family over the years.
That local connection means a lot to us.
You don’t have to know what treatment you need
This is probably the biggest thing we’d like people to know.
If you are searching for:
“facial Richmond”
or
“skin clinic Richmond”
or
“acne treatment Melbourne”
or
“blackhead removal Melbourne”
you might already have an idea of what you want.
But you don’t necessarily need to.
If you’re unsure, start with a consultation.
Tell us what is bothering you about your skin.
Tell us what you’ve tried.
Tell us what you like and don’t like about your skin.
We’ll take it from there.
Sometimes the answer is an extraction facial.
Sometimes it is a completely different treatment.
Sometimes it is changing your homecare.
And occasionally, it is doing absolutely nothing to your skin for a while and allowing it to recover.
There is no prize for having the most complicated skincare routine.
So, is Shine the right skin clinic for you?
We aren’t the right clinic for everyone, and that’s okay.
If you’re looking for somewhere to have your nails done, get your hair styled or have a quick beauty treatment, there are plenty of wonderful businesses around Richmond.
But if your main concern is your skin and you want to work with experienced therapists who will take the time to understand it, that’s what Shine does.
Our focus is skin.
From stubborn blackheads and congestion to acne, pigmentation, ageing, sensitivity and general skin health, we want to help you understand your skin and make better decisions about how you care for it.
We have been doing that in Melbourne for more than a decade.
And we’re very happy to continue doing it from our home on Swan Street in Richmond.
