Unlocking a Winter Glow: Expert Skincare Tips from Sheridan Rollard

As winter approaches and the weather changes in the Southern Hemisphere, our skin also changes with the seasons! Sheridan Rollard, owner of leading Melbourne facial haven Shine Skin and Body, offers valuable tips to maintain a radiant glow and keep skin in the best condition possible.

With extensive expertise in skincare and renowned for her extraction facials, Sheridan shares insights to combat the challenges of the colder months and how to keep skin healthy and vibrant from utilising oils and serums to maintaining good skincare and facials.

The Impact of Winter On Our Skin

Winter weather brings about a unique set of challenges for skin, as wet days, cold temperatures and harsh winds can strip away moisture, leaving our skin feeling tight and parched. Whether your skin type is dry, oily, or combination, the effects of winter weather can lead to skin not being in the best condition and looking dull and tired.

Dry or Dehydrated Skin?

“As part of winter skin maintenance, understanding whether your skin is dry or dehydrated is essential for effective skincare. They are two different things when it comes to skin, while skin can also be both, and different conditions require tailored management to prevent premature ageing and irritation,” Sheridan emphasises. “Seeing an expert can be of huge value as they will assess your skin and inform you of your skin’s condition.”

Combatting Dry Skin

For individuals with dry skin, Sheridan recommends incorporating omega fatty acids into their everyday skincare routines. “Omega-3, found in foods like salmon, nuts and seeds nourishes the skin with healthy fats, essential for maintaining moisture levels and so adding these foods to your diet is beneficial,” says Sheridan. “You can then also give your skin the boost it needs through specific skincare ingredients.”

Ingredients such as kiwi oil, vitamin E, avocado oil, ceramides and squalane help to nourish the skin with essential fats, enhance moisture retention, protect against free radicals and promote collagen production.

Combatting Dehydrated Skin

Combating dehydration is essential for maintaining healthy skin, especially during winter .Even oily skin can be dehydrated. Ensuring you are drinking enough water each day is the first step.

To further manage dehydration, Sheridan advises the use of hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, which acts as a sponge, attracting and holding water to provide immediate plumping and glow. Optimal hydration at the different levels of the skin can be achieved by using products containing a mix of high and low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid.

Sheridan also recommends combining oils like rosehip and avocado with your moisturisers for deeper hydration and protection against environmental damage.

Sunscreen is a Must

In addition to cleansing and moisturising, Sheridan emphasises the importance of sunscreen, even during the colder months.

“Just because the sun isn’t high in the sky, doesn’t mean that UV radiation isn’t around,” she warns. “So many people do not think to wear sunscreen during winter and the cooler months but it is so important to think of SPF as a year-round essential part of our everyday skincare routine. The damaging results of UV radiation are always present and SPF protection is needed to prevent premature ageing and damage from UVA and UVB rays.”

Importance of Facials

Sheridan also recommends making facials part of winter skincare routines, as many people focus on their skincare more during the summer. This is particularly relevant to IPL treatments, which are best this time of year, when the temperatures are lower as they boost collagen and reduce pigmentation. Effective facials, that properly assess your skin’s current condition, provides you with the knowledge you need for at-home care. The facial should be tailored to your skin’s needs, so changes in your skin are being addressed with each visit.

“As the winter chill sets in, prioritising hydration and protection in your skincare routine is essential for maintaining healthy, glowing skin,” continues Sheridan.

“By seeing skincare as seasonal self care, we are giving our skin the best chance of  being in optimal condition all year-round and into the future.”
