High Frequency Facial for Acne: The Treatment Your Skin Has Been Waiting For

There’s a reason some treatments never go out of style.

High frequency has been around for decades. It’s not new, it’s not trending on TikTok, and it doesn’t have a sleek rebrand. What it does have? A track record that most modern devices can’t touch, especially when it comes to acne.

At Shine, it’s one of the treatments we reach for most. Here’s why.

What Is High Frequency Treatment?

High frequency uses a low-current, alternating electrical charge delivered through a glass electrode that is filled with a gas. When the current passes through the electrode, it creates an oxygen pocket between the glass and your skin. That oxygen becomes unstable and converts into ozone.

Ozone is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and drying to active breakouts. It’s doing real work.

The treatment is used to:

  • Kill acne-causing bacteria
  • Calm down active breakouts faster
  • Prevent bacteria from spreading
  • Stimulate cell renewal
  • Aid healing post-extraction
  • Rejuvenate and clarify the skin overall

The Part That Makes It Different (and Why We Still Use It)

Most clinics have moved on from high frequency. We haven’t, and we won’t.

Here’s what no other machine does quite like this one: it can break down stubborn, deeply lodged cystic pimples. You know the ones. The kind that sit beneath the surface for weeks, won’t extract, won’t budge, and seem immune to everything you throw at them.

High frequency zaps directly into that pimple. We lift the electrode slightly off the skin and tap the spot four to six times. Quick, targeted, oddly satisfying. The discharge helps dry out the lesion and accelerates the skin’s healing response at a cellular level.

Is it painful? No. You’ll feel a gentle tingling, some warmth, and possibly a little more sensation during the direct zap, but nothing that warrants warning anyone. Most clients find it strangely satisfying.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

High frequency is included in your facial where clinically indicated, we assess your skin first, because not everyone needs it and we’re not in the business of treating for the sake of it.

It’s typically applied after extractions, over a serum, to maximise penetration and support healing. The whole process is calm, precise, and genuinely effective.

There are a few contraindications to be aware of: pregnancy or trying to conceive, epilepsy, a pacemaker, heart conditions, or metal implants. If any of these apply to you, just let us know when you book.

For me personally-

I suffered from acne for years. High frequency is the treatment I credit most with keeping my skin clear and preventing scarring. I’ve tried almost everything, this one stayed.
